Have a look at the first schematic. I would be glad to have your opinions on it.
The author seems to separate the 'Q multiplication' from 'mixing-detection' functions but as far as I see I'm not fully convinced.

There appears nothing unusual in that first circuit. The aerial is connected to the grounded grid amp V1a, the regenerative detector is V3a. V2 b takes the RF from the V3a cathode tap , rectifies it and passes it on to the audio stages. There are so many gain stages to account for the low 12v HT, and therefore reduced gain in each stage. The articles description of its operation is not quite correct. This design is too complicated to no advantage in performance in my opinion. There are better and simpler versions.
